PennJersey SheDevils (and Hooligans) are planning on posting a picture of the track damage and a donation jar on the Merch table at our next game, June 28. We are hoping that we can get those who attend the game to drop some loose change/bills in the jar so we can send it to Lali to help out with the rebuild. We are hoping that the other OSDA leagues will follow suit

Hooligans 2008

Filed under: Roller Derby Posts — Hellcity Hooligans @ 5:24 pm

Bio:

Formed in March 2007, the Hooligans team grew from the referees of the women’s team- The Penn Jersey She Devils. The Hooligans have been members of the OSDA since it’s inception as part of the co-ed flat track league, the Penn Jersey She Devils. We have a fully co-ed training program led by Roller Derby Hall of Famer Judy Sowinski and Warriors great Arnold Skip Schoen. We are very involved in the OSDA and are working hard to promote mens, women’s and co-ed roller derby.

The Penn Jersey She Devils are the first league to bring roller derby back to the Philadelphia region in almost 30 years. Founded in 2005 by Ken Sikes and Greg Spencer, the She Devils started out with just a handful of girls and a vision of restoring one of America’s most popular sports to some of its former glory.

Today, PJSD is a skater-owned and operated co-ed league more than fifty skaters strong and growing. Members hail from Philadelphia, PA all the way up to Woodbridge, NJ and come from all walks of life. There are singles, couples, tattoo artists, nurses, chefs, moms, ex-athletes, and novices throwing bruise-inducing blocks at every practice.

To help us skaters get the most out of every stride are two ex-professional skaters, Judy “The Polish Ace” Sowinski and Arnold “Skip” Schoen. We also have our champion speed skating advisor, known as “Big John” on the rink. Judy skated for the LA T-Birds, the Eastern Warriors, and NY Bombers between the late 50’s and the early 80’s. She was Rookie of the Year in 1972 and was inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 2004. She kicks our ass at every practice, demands 110 percent, and pushes each and every one of us to be the toughest skaters we can out on the rink. Skip also skated with the Eastern Warriors in the 1970’s and can still give our best jammers a run for their money. Every practice he’s skating right along side us, teaching us the proper ways to block, whip, turn, and fall… so we’re still in one piece after a hard game!

Currently, PJSD skates flat track derby, as do most of the hundred plus leagues around the world. However, one of PJSD’s main goals is to have its own venue and a banked track. In the interest of keeping today’s version of derby as close to banked-track rules as possible, the She Devils helped found the Old School Derby Association in 2007. OSDA’s rules are designed specifically to keep derby real, rough, and unpredictable - as it should be! Check out the OSDA’s website to learn more about how we play the game and find other member leagues in your area. Better yet, come to one of our games and see the excitement for yourself. Take a look at our events and buy tickets in advance to avoid missing out. We can’t wait to see you trackside!

Dearest Penn Jersey Roller She-Devils Roller Derby fans,

Hello and how are you? Tuffy Muffy (#5), here, your faithful correspondent from that rough and tumble old-school league, the Penn Jersey She-Devils! I’m that friendly buzz in your ear, reminding you what events you want to be the first to know about; so you can brag about being on the inside of the roller derby world to your friends, of course!

First of all, let’s recap March’s intense season opener, the Shamrock Shakedown between the Sadistic Sweethearts and the Dishonor Roll.  The Sweethearts came out triumphant 49-23 over the Dishonor Roll, but trust me, it was no easy road to victory.  Both teams had a number of rookies skating in their first league match-up, myself included.  I thought of many of us as feral beasts trying to claw through the pack in any way possible, leading to multiple visits to the penalty box and 2 girl-fights that stopped play entirely!  The refs had their work cut out for them, but rest assured, they only awarded legitimately earned points!  I definitely saw members from the Fallen Angels watching closely and taking notes for April’s game.  Check our website for stats and pictures from the Shakedown.  www.shedevilsrollerderby.com/Media.html

If you didn’t attend the Shakedown, PJSD’s Spring BREAK ’08 between the Dishonor Roll and the Fallen Angels, is a must-see!  The Dishonor Roll is sure to be fierce as they battle back after March’s game and they may even change up their strategy to throw the Angels a curveball.  The other thing to look for at our April game is the gang from Ride For Dime Philly.  Ride For Dime (RFD) is an annual charity ride and concert in memory of musician Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott, along with Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk.  www.ridefordime.com  The proceeds from Spring BREAK’s 50/50 will go to RFD and they will be in attendance to talk about their big concert coming up to benefit Little Kids Rock.  www.littlekidsrock.org  All this and more will go down on Saturday, April 26th at the International Sports, Skating, and Fun Centre in Mount Laurel, NJ.  Doors at 7:30pm, get there early for the best rink-side seating!  www.intsports.com/mtl

To prep for April’s showdown, come visit us at Philly’s Tattoo Arts Convention from April 18-20th at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel.  Tattoos are to roller derby what cookies are to milk!  Get inked from some of the area’s most talented artists and say hi to your favorite She-Devils while you’re at it!  We’ll have tickets for the game, merch, tattoos to show off, and a healthy dose of sass.  www.tattooedkingpin.com/philly2008.html

Finally, while you’re marking your calenders, save Friday, May 2nd.  The She-Devils are pairing up with the party planners of Emerge to celebrate the Equality Forum  www.equalityforum.com and benefit the Sapphire Fund  www.sapphirefund.org!  This year’s Emerge party is set to be the biggest yet with a whole line-up of bands, DJ Cozmic Cat, and even comedienne Marga Gomez!  The party goes from 9pm-3am at Transit Nightclub, 600 Spring Garden, Philadelphia.  Purchase tickets at http://emerge.sapphirefund.org

Now that your April is all planned out, call up your friends, brag a little, then be kind and invite your friends along!  I, personally, can’t wait to see all you fine people out!

Sincerely,
Tuffy Muffy #5

P.S.  If you’d like to request a She-Devils presence at your event, simply contact us with information about your event, the date, and the time.  We’d be happy to show up and work the crowd at your happy hour, dance party, gig, business luncheon, inaugural address, etc.  events@shedevilsrollerderby.com

Teen Wolf of the NY Shock Exchange and NJ Dirty Dames was injured in a recent public scrimmage. Please donate.

For those that haven’t heard, TeenWolf, is scheduled for surgery for multiple leg and ankle fractures from the New York Shock Exchange bout in Chicago last weekend.

Not only does he have to lay off the skates for a bit, but he has some monster hospital bills to pay for, and no insurance to pay for them.

Anything helps.
If you are able to make a donation, big or small.
